Fish Oil and Omega-3

What is fish oil?

Fish oil is a rich source of the two essential omega-3 fatty acids known as EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). It is generally found in the fatty tissues of oily fish which stay in the cold water.

As the body cannot make the fatty acids like Omega 3 and Omega 6 and are essential for the body so those need to be obtained by daily diet. For most of human history, these fatty acids were present in the diet in roughly equal amounts. However, modern foods provide an overabundance of omega-6 fatty acids, mostly from refined vegetable oils that are used in fried foods as well as snack foods such as cookies and crackers. Omega-3s, conversely, are now relatively rare in modern day diets. The result is an imbalance of these essential fats that result in inflammation and several diseases.

DHA is an essential component of membranes of nerve cells in the brain which plays an important role in brain development, whereas EPA helps in better heart health. Research says that omega-3 helps in reducing inflammation, in turn, helps in reducing the risk and symptoms of different kinds of disorders influenced by inflammation. These may include heart attacks, strokes, several forms of cancer and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Omega-3 fatty acids and their metabolite products may be effective at blocking the growth of cancerous cells– and could be especially effective at inhibiting the growth of triple-negative breast cancer tumors, according to research.

What are the signs of a deficiency?

The average modern diet is universally lacking in omega-3. Low levels of Omega 3 will lead to some health-related issues. Other signs of possible deficiency include excessive thirst, frequent urination, and dry hair to lead hair loss and developed skin disease.

How much, and what kind, does an adult need?

It is recommended to take a product that provides 700 to 1,000 mg of EPA and 200 to 500 mg of DHA daily in the smallest number of pills. Pregnant women, in particular, should be sure to use the supplement after consulting with a healthcare professional, as adequate supplies of omega-3 fatty acids are crucial to optimal brain and nervous system development in the fetus. At the time of choosing a supplement to prefer the one which is derived from molecularly distilled fish oils – as they are naturally high in EPA and DHA and also low in contaminants like heavy metals

Are there any risks associated with too much?

Very large intakes of fish oil/omega-3 fatty acids (termed “Eskimo amounts” by the National Institutes of Health, referring to diets that consist almost exclusively of fish) may increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke and have been associated with nosebleeds and blood in the urine.

Are there any other special considerations?

If you are taking any anticoagulant drugs like Coumadin, or have had a hemorrhagic stroke, or are scheduled for surgery use fish oil carefully as they can affect blood clotting. People who suffer from allergies to fish have to avoid fish-derived omega-3 capsules.

Omega 3 Fish Oil for Weight Loss.

Some of the studies have stated that omega-3 fish oil improves blood flow to the muscles during the time of exercise and helps in stimulating enzymes that transport fat to where it can be used up for energy.

According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Greenland Eskimos have 85% less heart disease, than those in the USA and one of the significant differences is in their diet.

This imbalanced Omega-3 ratio can cause severe inflammation.  Now a day’s numerous health problems including heart disease, digestive disorders, allergies and joint pain are caused by inflammation.
